Montreal: An unpleasant past trip that stuck with me.
Coming forward about an unpleasant Montreal trip I had in the past.
Very recently, I came back from Montreal and I will talk about my recent trip experiences in an upcoming post. On this post, I wanted to share an unpleasant story I have about my trip to Montreal back in 2019.
The background.
A good friend of mines, let’s call him Ron, and I decided to visit Montreal during September because it was close to us in NYC. Since we both somewhat keep up with game, we realized that Toronto was a depressing place and opted to go to Montreal. It was my first time abroad in years.
We arrive and I managed to get a hotel on St Laurent street which many say is one of Montreal’s prime streets for game. We were only in Montreal for a weekend and arrived around Friday night or so where the local Irish Pub, McKibbins, was playing a football game.
Getting to it.
I hit it off with a bartender who looked like Gal Gadot and we talked for a bit. I even IG closed her and told her to let me know if she is ever in NYC. She gives me her IG which was private. We have some bar food and some drinks as we watch a college football game.
After that, we walk the streets of St Laurent and troll some girls asking if they are from Toronto. Later on, we go to a few of the bars on St Lau and notice that the scene was obscenely young. Everyone looked to be college age and even below 21 there.
Exploring.
As usual, we do our touristy stuff which Ron is an expert at and go to Mont Royal and eat some poutine as well. Walking through Old Montreal was a beautiful experience as well. After that, we go out again and Ron tells me he needs to visit a different city in Quebec so he only has that Saturday night to game with me.
A drink at Churchills.
After we are done touring, Ron takes me to Churchills which is in the more Anglo part of Montreal. We have drinks there and I notice that this bartender is a bit flirty and somewhat aggressive with me. I am trying to score on this trip so she is chatting with us as a bunch of old guys stare at us.
We have some food and drinks and I tip her. My game was trash back then and after we are mostly done, I notice that bartender sitting down and eating. Being the fool I am, I go up and chat with her and tell her we should stay in touch. She tells me “oh I do not give out my number”.
Well, I go use the restroom since I did have to pee and when I come out to be on my way out, a group of people are talking about how awful it was that I would go up to a bartender and ask for her number. In hindsight, what I did was dumb but my god, I was not even loud about it or anything. Guess once you are past 60, you have little to live for and get nosy about everything.
My embarrassment would not stop there.
The last night.
We go to hit up St Lau again and after about an hour of some street game and going to some venues on a Saturday night, we come up mostly empty handed. I was doing all the street game and IG closed this cute brunette but could not get anything going with her. Not long after, Ron has to go.
I wandered St Lau and tried to get into some venues but found them to be sausagefests where I was blown out for the most part.
In the rain.
I remember it now and how clear it was in my memory.
I get in line for a venue in the rain and cold and talk to a mixed set in front of me and one behind me. As we get to the front of the line, the bouncer at the venue looks at me. I smile and he says the venue is full so I have to go. Puzzled, I go but then as I look back, he lets the mixed set behind me get in.
That experience always stuck with me. In fact, it was one of the most humiliating things I had to deal with in Montreal. Since then, I have zero respect for any of the nightlife staff in a lot of its venues.
A miserable trip ends.
My first ever trip to Montreal was filled with humiliation and embarrassment, would I ever vindicate myself? Stay tuned!
